Xilinx and Samsung Build Industry’s First ‘Compute Storage’

Xilinx and Samsung Electronics yesterday announced a product called the Samsung SmartSSD Computational Storage Drive (CSD). SmartSSD CSD leverages Xilinx FPGAs to move compute resources closer to storage to improve processing speed and efficiency, delivering the performance and scalability required for data-intensive applications.

According to partners, SmartSSD CSD is a flexible, programmable storage platform that developers can use to create a variety of unique and scalable accelerators that address a wide range of data center challenges. This enables a new generation of software developers to easily create innovative, hardware-accelerated solutions in their familiar high-level languages. SmartSSD CSD is said to improve data processing performance by 10x or more in applications such as database management, video processing, artificial intelligence, sophisticated search and virtualization.

With the FPGA accelerator, Xilinx can bring high-speed computing closer to the storage space, eliminating the downsides of latency and power consumption associated with transferring it to the server’s central processor. This frees server resources to more efficiently perform other higher-level tasks.

The SmartSSD CSD platform is designed to simplify the creation of custom applications using the Vitis unified software platform and acceleration libraries. Runtimes, libraries, APIs, and drivers can be built into the system using common high-level languages ​​such as C, C ++, and OpenCL.

In addition, Xilinx has released a high-performance, easy-to-deploy data encryption solution based on dm-crypt. Using standard Linux kernel modules, SmartSSD CSD developers can use the Vitis libraries to create ready-made acceleration applications that easily scale across multiple SmartSSD CSDs.

Typical tasks that benefit from SmartSSD CSD include big data analytics, store search, video transcoding, and transparent compression.

SmartSSD CSD is a 2.5 ” (U.2) standard form factor PCIe Gen3 x4 solid state drive. The volume is 3.84 TB, but the accelerated transparent compression allows you to store up to 12 TB of data or more. The drive has an embedded accelerator based on FPGA Xilinx Kintex UltraScale + with more than a million logical cells and hardware acceleration units for digital signal processing. The accelerator configuration includes 4 GB of DDR4-2400 memory. The sequential read speed reaches 3500 MB / s, sequential write – 3200 MB / s. Performance on operations with random access reaches 800,000 IOPS in write mode and 135,000 IOPS in read mode. The power consumption of the device is 25 W, and the resource is declared equal to one complete rewriting per day within five years of warranty operation

Drives are already available for pre-order. Deliveries will begin in January.
