TSMC plans to open a chip factory in Japan in 2023

TSMC expects to commission its first chip factory in Japan in 2023, the source said.

The planned plant at Kumamoto on Kyushu Island in western Japan will be built in two phases. The TSMC board is expected to make an investment decision in the current quarter.

When the plant reaches full capacity, it will be able to produce about 40,000 wafers a month using 28nm technology, which is widely used for various types of microcircuits, including image processors and microcontrollers for automotive and consumer electronics.

The plant is expected to be primarily used to produce image sensors for Sony, TSMC’s largest customer in Japan.

According to Nikkei whistleblowers, TSMC’s final decision on the plant continues to depend on a number of factors, including incentives and support from the Japanese government, as well as the commitment of local suppliers to build infrastructure for chips and develop supply chains.
