The biggest innovation in Android 12. First info on Project Mainline

As it became known, Google wants to provide users with an easier way to update the Android operating system. The search giant launched Project Mainline to make Android updates easier.

XDA Developers forum member luca020400 noticed that Google is converting Android Runtime (or ART) into a Mainline module, which allows updates to key system components to be sent via Google Play. ART compiles Android application bytecode into machine instructions. If Google wants to change the way the code compiles in Android 12, it can be changed at any time, instead of relying on traditional operating system updates. Users don’t have to wait weeks or months for new features or security fixes.

Project Mainline expands the capabilities of Project Treble. At one time, Project Treble reduced the degree of OEMs’ dependence on SoC suppliers for each individual OS update. And Project Mainline reduces Google’s reliance on OEMs to provide security updates for key OS components. Project Mainline extends the Treble philosophy to more critical parts of the Android platform, removing OEMs as dependent resellers from the equation. Project Mainline’s goal is for Google to take control of security-critical infrastructure components and system applications, and maintain consistency in development without OEMs. Project Mainline is rightfully called the biggest change to Android since Project Treble.

As such, Android 12 could partially solve the problem where OEMs often delay or don’t release Android updates for different smartphone models.
