Tesla will ask for $ 500 for an update that returns radio to Model S and Model X

Tesla is constantly updating its electric vehicle software. Adding new features increases resource requirements so that owners of older models may not have received these features. These include, for example, entertainment features such as Tesla Theater (streaming video via YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and Twitch), Tesla Arcade (video games such as Beach Buggy Racing 2, Cuphead, and Stardew Valley), and TeslaCam and Sentry Mode. For these delights to become available in Model S and Model X electric vehicles, an on-board computer needs to be replaced.

Earlier this year, Tesla began offering a $ 2,500 Infotainment Upgrade (MCU1 to MCU2 upgrade) for owners of older Model S and Model X vehicles that includes the features mentioned above. By the way, another reason for the update was a problem that manifested itself in the first generation computers.

However, the update has a drawback – it removes the radio function originally present in the Model S and Model X. This decision of the manufacturer disappointed some owners of these electric vehicles, but Tesla already has an answer. The company will begin offering another upgrade this quarter, the Radio Upgrade. In it, the radio reception function will be restored. But not free. Here’s what the manufacturer says:

“The purchase and installation of Radio Upgrade will be available for vehicles that have already passed the Infotainment Upgrade. For vehicles that have not yet gone through the Infotainment Upgrade, we recommend running the Infotainment Upgrade and Radio Upgrade at the same time. The Radio Upgrade costs an additional $ 500 plus tax, and there is no price difference when you install Infotainment Upgrade and Radio Upgrade together or separately. “
