Google’s Project Treble has been around since 2017 with the goal of accelerating the release of Android updates by modulating the underlying structure. As we previously reported, Google and Qualcomm have teamed up to update Snapdragon smartphones.

An important clarification is that smartphones will have three numbered Android updates from launch. As for the four-year support, we are talking about small security fixes.

Starting with the new Snapdragon 888 platform, Project Treble will bring enhanced support for Android and security updates, a big shift in software update policy. Back in August, Samsung announced that the Note20 lineup would receive three numbered Android updates. Google’s own Pixel lineup continues to lead the Android market with a three-year plan of Android updates and security fixes.

Google claims that all Qualcomm chipsets that will launch on Android 11 devices will receive extended software support. So far, there is no mention of any other chipset manufacturers besides Qualcomm.

It is also known that Android 10 currently has 667 million active users, 82% of whom received updates over the air directly to their devices.
