Radeon RX 6800 unexpectedly lost to GeForce RTX 3070 in a new test

Radeon RX 6800 unexpectedly lost to GeForce RTX 3070 in a new test

Less and less time remains before the start of sales of Radeon RX 6800 video cards, and more and more details about them appear on the Web. This time, both models of the line – RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT – were tested in the Geekbench 4.4 benchmark. The results were somewhat unexpected.

But first, about the test conditions. Apparently, it was run by the same user on the same test system – with an Intel Core i9-10900K processor, Asus ROG Maximus XII Extreme motherboard (on the Z490 chipset) and 16 GB of 3600 MHz RAM. The Open CL benchmark contains three results for RX 6800 XT and two for RX 6800. The spread is small – 3-5%. The frequency of the Radeon RX 6800 was 1.81 GHz, the Radeon RX 6800 XT – 2.02 GHz. These are standard frequencies in gaming mode, so the results will be higher when overclocked.

And it is possible that many users will want to overclock the RX 6800, since the performance in the OpenCL test leaves much to be desired. Of course, this is far from the most revealing test, especially for consumer models (for users, the results in games are more important), but, nevertheless, it must be taken into account.

GeForce RTX 3080 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

As you can see in the screenshots, the Radeon RX 6800 is minimally inferior to the GeForce RTX 3070. But the Radeon RX 6800 XT is already quite inferior to the GeForce RTX 3080. The best test results of the RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT are taken into account.

Interestingly, using the Ryzen 5000 processor can greatly improve the performance of the Radeon RX 6000. For example, in a system with a 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X, the RX 6800 XT showed a result 40,000 points higher than the result of the same video card in an assembly with an Intel Core i9-10900K processor … And this test confirmed AMD’s claims of improving system performance when the Ryzen 5000 processor and the Radeon RX 6000 graphics card work together.
