Murata will soon start mass production of solid-state batteries

Murata Manufacturing plans to start mass production of all-solid-state batteries in the coming months. These batteries, comparing favorably with modern counterparts in terms of safety and energy density, the Japanese company intends to supply to manufacturers of headphones and other wearable devices.

The manufacturing breakthrough was made possible by combining the lithium-ion battery technology acquired from Sony with the laminating technology developed for the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors, the main product of the Kyoto-based company. A solid-state battery production line will also be located in Japan.

“We will start production [полностью твердотельных батарей] in small quantities in the first half of the fiscal year, which will end in March 2022, and we will expand production in its second half, ”a source quoted one of the company’s executives as saying.

It is planned that over time the company will produce 100,000 batteries per month.

Murata’s technology is not suitable for high-capacity batteries, but works well for small batteries used in wearable devices. Surface mount batteries simplify device design and cell layout by eliminating the need for separate space and wiring.
