Apple Grants a Patent for Electronic Cases Made of Custom Fabric from User-Provided Image

The US Patent Office today granted Apple a patent that describes “custom fabric cases for electronic devices.” The basis for such fabric, according to the idea of the inventors, can be a photograph or other image in digital form provided by the user. A computer program prepares the image, possibly changing its resolution and number of colors to match the capabilities of the textile or knitting machine. After that, the image is converted into a set of commands, following which the machine creates the fabric, which is subsequently used to make the cover.

The patent specifies that a fabric cover for an electronic device consists of a back panel and side walls. They can be one-piece or stitched together. The image is on the back. Each loop of fabric can correspond to a pixel in a digital image.
