Apple A14 Bionic is the first 5nm single-chip system among both announced and released to the market.

The A14 Bionic contains nearly 12 billion transistors, and all of them are packed into a chip with an area of ‚Äč‚Äčabout 88 mm2, as shown by source measurements.

At the same time, according to the calculations of the source, the density of transistors in the new Apple SoC is significantly lower than the indicator that the TSMC process technology allows to achieve. Moreover, it is below the limits usually reached by Apple.

In particular, TSMC technologies allow reaching 171 million transistors per mm2, and in the case of the new Apple platform, the density is only 134 million, that is, 78.3% of the maximum possible. For comparison, in the case of the A13 Bionic, the figure was 98.65%, and in previous generations of Apple platforms it was not lower than 90%.

The source claims that the fault is SRAM memory, which is difficult to scale, and this memory in the new platform is about 30%.
