The Chinese company BOE has patented a new type of display that will allow visually impaired people to feel images. Despite the development of information display technologies, electronic devices with braille are very expensive and limited in the type of content displayed.

If the latest BOE patent is implemented in a commercial device, the situation could change dramatically. Unlike existing solutions that display limited content and are also quite slow, BOE development is faster and offers more options. The solution consists of two devices: the first and the main one is a touchscreen display that works with the second – a tiny gadget that you put on your finger.

When the user uses a small tactile device and moves their hand over the touchscreen that displays an image, they receive tactile feedback. That is, the screen conveys information about what exactly is displayed on it. The patent says that this solution will allow people with visual impairments to go beyond text recognition. They will also be able to “see” shapes and images in general.

If BOE manages to bring development to a commercial state, and manufacturers start using the technology in their devices, then smartphones may appear on the market that will offer visually impaired users a new level of interaction with content.

The patent was published on January 26, and it is currently unknown when this technology will appear in commercial devices.
